: Award Winning Japanese Artist Samizu Matsuki
: Japanese artist who won the Gold Medal at the First New York International Art Show in 1970, the Grand Prix at the Locust Valley Art Show, Long Island, New York in 1971 and the Award of Excellence at the Abraham & Straus-Hempstead Art Show, "Long Island Art '74". Samizu is the first woman to be inducted into the prestigious Salmagundi Club.
: Oh, we do like Japan! There has been much controversy over this issue, but we proudly proclaim again that our criticisms come from a hope to see Japan protect its strengths and maximize its potential. We feel sorry for a conception of love hollowed out to command unambiguous and unconditional acceptance of the status quo. We certainly appreciate specific strengths of the Japanese system: excellent transportation, healthy food, public civility, product diversity, and visual proficiency. The question is whether these system outputs fully justify the less desirable elements running behind the scenes — monopoly, duopoly, oligopoly, organized crime, statism, patriarchy, feudalism, or worse. More importantly, are these dark forces integral to producing desired outputs or can they be cleanly removed like vestigial organs?

: No Sword
: No-sword is the personal website of Matt Treyvaud, a writer, translator and linguist who lives in a seaside town near Kamakura, Japan. His current major online projects are the web journal Néojaponisme and his own Japanese language/literature/culture blog, confusingly also called No-sword. His 30-evening speed translation of Natsume Sōseki's Botchan remains popular, while his ongoing translation of Higuchi Ichiyō's Takekurabe is proceeding at a much more leisurely pace. He also tries to keep this fairly complete list of his translations up to date. Other projects of Matt's that might interest you include his 8-bit renditions of two songs from Puccini's Madama Butterfly, an eerily familiar survival horror text adventure called DotQuest, and Ranyōshū, the random waka generator. Away from his computer, Matt speaks English and Japanese, can read ancient, medieval, classical and modern varieties of both (where applicable), and is working on his Korean, French and Ainu. He spends as much time as possible in second-hand bookstores. At home he plays second-tier stringed instruments, cooks scrambled eggs, and reads long-forgotten Edo bestsellers.
